De achtste editie van de Thoolen NJCM-Scriptieprijs is gewonnen door Lucia van der Meulen met haar scriptie ‘Combating Sexism through Human Rights: Present and potential protection in Europe’, geschreven aan Universiteit Utrecht. De jury vond haar interdisciplinaire aanpak, waarbij ze haar bevindingen uit de sociale psychologie verbindt aan het mensenrechtelijke kader, over subtiele vormen van ‘sexism’ origineel en verhelderend. Zeker na #metoo is dit een urgent mensenrechtelijk onderwerp.

De tweede plek gaat naar Wiebke Judith met haar scriptie ‘Circumventing the ECHR? Italy’s Cooperation with the Libyan Coast Guard under Scrutiny’, geschreven aan Universiteit Leiden. De jury was zeer tevreden over het mensenrechtelijke perspectief van waaruit er grondige aandacht besteed werd aan de schrijnende situatie van immigranten op de Middellandse Zee. Het lukte Wiebke om de complexe materie helder weer te geven en concrete conclusies te trekken – een nuttige scriptie voor de rechtspraktijk.

De jury beoordeelde de scripties op: de originaliteit van het onderwerp, de mensenrechtelijke toepassing, het wetenschappelijk niveau, vernieuwing, bronnenonderzoek en leesbaarheid/toegankelijkheid. Het panel was onder de indruk van beide scripties en het was dan ook een nek-aan-nek race. Er was veel bewondering voor de bronnen die door beiden gehanteerd werden en het fraaie taalgebruik. De onderwerpen zijn daarnaast maatschappelijk zeer relevant.

• Prof. mr. Egbert Myjer, bijzonder hoogleraar Mensenrechten, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; Nederlandse rechter bij het Europees Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens in Straatsburg van 2004 tot 2012;
• Mr. dr. Daphina Misiedjan, universitair docent mensenrechten en milieu aan de Erasmus Universiteit/ISS;
• Mr. dr. Jasper Krommendijk, universitair hoofddocent Internationaal en Europees Recht aan de Radboud Universiteit.

De prijs(uitreiking)

De Thoolen NJCM-Scriptieprijs bestaat uit de publicatie van de winnende scriptie in boekvorm door Stichting NJCM-Boekerij. De prijsuitreiking zal plaatsvinden op 12 maart tijdens het Lustrumcongres 45-jaar NJCM in De Balie te Amsterdam.

The jury of the Thoolen NJCM Dissertation Prize 2019 has chosen Lucia van der Meulen as the winner of the eighth edition of the Thoolen NJCM Dissertation Prize for her dissertation on ‘Combating Sexism through Human Rights: Present and potential protection in Europe’, written at Utrecht University. The jury found her interdisciplinary approach, linking her findings from social psychology to the human rights framework, on subtle forms of ‘sexism’ original and clear. Especially after #metoo, this is an urgent human rights issue.

Wiebke Judith was elected second with her thesis ‘Circumventing the ECHR? Italy’s Cooperation with the Libyan Coast Guard under Scrutiny’, written at Leiden University. The jury was pleased with the human rights perspective through which she paid attention to the distressing situation of immigrants on the Mediterranean Sea. Wiebke presented the complex subject matter in a clear manner and draw concrete conclusions – a relevant thesis for legal practice.

The jury assessed the theses on: the originality of the subject, the human rights application, the scientific level, innovation, source material research and readability/accessibility. The panel was impressed by both theses and it was a close call. The jury admired the variety of sources used by both writers and the eloquent use of language. In addition, the topics are of high societal relevance.

The award (ceremony)

The Thoolen NJCM Thesis Prize consists of the publication of the winning thesis in book form by ‘Stichting NJCM-Boekerij’. The award ceremony will take place on March 12th during the 45^th Anniversary Conference of the NJCM at De Balie in Amsterdam.
